About Our Team

Shinae Yoon joined Visual Communications in 2008 as the organization’s Executive Director. She has worked as a writer, filmmaker, and arts administrator in the non-profit arts community for over a decade. Prior to joining VC, she was Executive Director of Young Chicago Authors in Chicago, Illinois, a non-profit organization that encourages self-expression for youth through creative writing workshops, publishing and performance opportunities. She is a graduate of Boston University.

Abraham Ferrer is the Director of Exhibitions and Festival Co-Director, curating Visual Communications’ year-round screenings and exhibition programs, including the annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival each May. Abe chairs the Festival Programming Committee and supervises seasonal Festival staff and volunteers. Also a visual artist, Abe has produced many short animation films. He has been a part of the Visual Communications team since 1985.

Jean Ho joined Visual Communications in 2008 as Director of Development. Prior to VC, she was the Development Manager for Cool Culture, a Brooklyn-based non-profit that provides low-income children and families with free, unlimited access to 75 arts and cultural institutions in New York City. She holds a BA in English from UC Berkeley.

Kennedy Kabasares has been a part of the Visual Communications team since 1998. As Administrative & Membership Associate, Kennedy oversees VC’s thriving membership campaign and provides general administrative support for the organization. Kennedy is an accomplished actor, stand-up comic, and trapeze artist and he regularly performs in venues throughout Los Angeles.

David Magdael is Co-Director of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. He oversees the programming, fundraising and publicity efforts for the Festival, along with Co-Director Abe Ferrer.  David is the founder of David Magdael & Associates, a public relations and marketing firm for independent filmmakers.  His clients include the Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker, Keiko Ibi (THE PERSONALS) and Sundance Festival winner, Kate Davis (SOUTHERN COMFORT). David joined VC in 1996.


Rukshana Singh
 
joined Visual Communications in 2011 as Preservation Manager.  She oversees VC’s archive of historic films and video, oral histories, and photographs documenting Asian American communities in Southern California.  Rukshana is a graduate of the Asian American Studies MA program and the Masters of Library and Information Science program at UCLA. 

Susan Soohoo is Visual Communications’ Bookkeeper. She manages VC’s cash flow and performs payable and receivable duties. Susan has over twenty years of finance experience and has been working at VC since 2000.

Visual Communications' landmark production VAITAFE: RUNNING WATER, was co-directed by Takashi Fujii and Foe Alo, Jr. with the support of VC staffers and novice Samoan American filmmakers from L.A.'s Harbor district. The film premiered in 1982 with a community luau and celebration at Harbor College, in the heart of L.A.'s Pacific Islander community.
