THE RIDE
(USA, 2003) Dir./Scr.: Nathan Kurosawa
21-year old professional surfer David Monroe seemingly has it all—select
females, corporate and label endorsements, an army of fans, an agent,
limo’ rides, and the occasional explosions of arrogance. He
even surmises that the misadventures following a mishap on the waves
in his next competition—landing him in 1911 Waikiki, no less—can
only be explained as a well-orchestrated prank by hisrivals. David
plays along with this apparent temporal rift until he realizes that
the boards on this beach are much longer and heavier than the ones
at “home.” Now a poseur in this pipeline continuum, his
lifestyle amps only in larghetto mode; the result of such humility,
incidentally, grandfathers him into the royalty of surfing (and of
Olympic gold medals, for that matter) who is found in Monroe’s
rescuer – the humble, strong, sensible Paoa…Duke Paoa
Kahanamoku, that is.
