IN THE BODY AND IN THE MIND (RT: 77 minutes)
Stories of distant memory, great expectations, and recovered identity
are just some of the touchstones contained in this collection of short
works that locate their narratives in worlds both old and new. From
a sojourn back to the motherland, to a love-letter to an expected
arrival, these stories promise a wealth of evocative reminiscences.

EXODUS
(Wanita Yang Berlari)
(Indonesia/Singapore, 2003) Dir.: Sherman Ong; Scr.: Sherman Ong,
Chendra Effendy
Languid yet subtle, EXODUS deals with the unspoken nuances of human
emotions. Set against the backdrop of the dominant Javanese culture,
this story deals with the aspirations and identity of Indonesian
Chinese in a post-Shuarto era through the eyes of a lower class
shampoo girl. Her encounter with an aristocratic Javanese court
dancer sparks an awakening that manifests the dialectics of obsession
and the transient nature of human affection.
Video, 29 min., color, Narrative

An unseen guitarist offers a melancholy rendition of the Eric Burden
classic, “The House of the Rising Sun.”

DISTANCE MARKED
(USA/Korea, 2000) Dir./Scr.: Susan E. Kim
A Korean American woman journeys to South Korea for the first time,
in the process uncovering multiple layers of identity. DISTANCE
MARKED identifies the boundaries and mysteries of family history
and self-mythology, and hints at the possibility for self-awareness
through inquiry, effort, and a little luck.
Video, 10 min., color, Documentary
DE CLAIM: HISTORY TAUGHT ME POETRY
(USA, 2003) Dir.: Irene Soriano
The words of childhood writings reverberate in the director’s
head as she recalls the city and homeland that she visits each year,
only to return home in the end.
Video, 3 min., color, Narrative
DOKI-DOKI
(USA /Japan, 2003) Dir./Scr.: Chris Eska
In suburban Tokyo, commuters find themselves waiting every day with
the same group of stranger for the same seat on the same train.
Perhaps over 1000 days never knowing who they are, what their lives
are like, where they live, who they love. Until one day, things
change.
Video, 30 min., color, Narrative
