WEBDIVA (www.xxx.com)
(Philippines, 2003) Dir.: Tikoy Aguiluz; Scr: Sarge Laquesta, Yasmin Katrina Coles
Joanna, an Americanized Filipina, finds herself returning to Manila as a stranger in a strange land. Faced with difficult circumstances and forced to resolve her own conflicts, she finds solace and identity in her new job as a sex worker in an online pornography business. Along the way, she discovers fame, love and other sides of her self through her occupation and through the people she encounters. There is the internet entrepreneur, burned out by the dotcom bust, seeking career vindication and rebirth; the clear-eyed ex-prostitute who has experienced the difference between real and virtual prostitution; and Joanna’s online lover, who represents her delicate hopes for her own future.
Told against a backdrop of the dual realities of the internet world and the real world, WEBDIVA also explores the Filipino’s emerging online presence, and asks questions about the Filipino’s notion of reality. With thriving relationships, shifting identities and even terrible crimes such as the “lovebug” virus, the internet holds its own against physical reality, where the traditional forces of good and evil stage their own issues and conflicts.
35mm, 110 min., color, Narrative, in English and Tagalog w/Eng. subtitles
