FIRST MORNING
(USA, 2003) Dir./Scr.: Victor Vu
A young man, Tuan Nguyen, returns home on the threshold of the Lunar New Year and finds himself a stranger in his own family. The mysterious disappearance of his younger sister Linh forces Tuan on a quest for answers that leads him back in time, from the family’s perilous escape from Vietnam to their separation and reunion in the United States, where they struggle to piece together their shattered lives and face the tragedy of false expectations. As the family’s tumultuous past unravels, the film details a closer understanding of Linh’s difficult journey from youth to womanhood—from lost identity to self-discovery—from alienation to hope and rebirth.
Video, 90 min., color, Narrative, in English and Vietnamese w/Eng. subtitles
