The world has become a much smaller place in the twenty years that VC FILMFEST has been in existence, yet at times we can be so emotionally distant even while so physically close. Real, virtual and psychic transnationals obsess over the power and lure of “place” and ponder the true meaning of home.

MADONNA

A carefully-observed portrait of the director’s former neighbor, a housewife named Madonna who performs the vital yet unsung duties of keeping house and home together.

LEANG’S JOURNEY
(USA, 2003) Dir.: Koji Hayasaki
Leang Lang, who came to the United States as a refugee in 1981 after surviving the killing fields, is a leader in the Cambodian community of the Bronx. While he strives to maintain his culture and pass his values down to young Cambodians, he must deal with his daughter Moni, who was born in a Thai refugee camp but is a high school drop-out struggling to identify with Cambodians. Leang tries to support her and struggles to balance the love for his daughter and the love of his culture.

BEST OF THE WURST

BEST OF THE WURST chronicles a Korean American woman’s discovery of Berlin through its ultimate snackfood--Currywurst. BEST OF THE WURST explores the lively neighborhoods of Berlin and various wurstbuden as the currywurst stands of Berlin provide a glimpse into the city, its neighborhoods, its history and inhabitants. From Curry 36 at Mehringdamm and one of the oldest stands, Konnopke in the Schoenhauser Allee; to the Turkish neighborhood of Kreuzberg, tourist-infested Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburger Tor, director Lee observes how currywurst is enjoyed by everyone from school children to Chancellor Schroeder. From taxi drivers to art dealers, police officers to university students, eating currywurst is a pastime that transcends social class, ethnicity, age, and national origin.
