BRIGHT FUTURE
(Japan, 2002) Dir./Scr.: Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Without realizing it, the unstable Yuji falls in love with his workmate,
the seemingly placid Mamoru; they have dead-end jobs in a hand-towel
laundry and both are irritated by the false/sinister bonhomie of their
boss. When Yuji finally voices his feelings, Mamoru (by now in jail
for murder) turns his back—and so Yuji stumbles into a relationship
with Mamoru’s father, a recycler of techno-junk. Shot through
with enigmatic metaphors, notably Mamoru’s project to acclimatize
a jellyfish to fresh water, BRIGHT FUTURE offers a poetic and mysterious
vision of what it might take to change people and the situations they
live in.
35mm, 92 min., color, Narrative, in Japanese w/Eng. subtitles

Eros is the eternal theme for human beings, and it is a very significant

war of disorienting curves.
