QUEEN OF ASIA
(United States, 2005) Dir./Wtr.: Joselito Torres
The latest work by the director of A COMPANY OF FRIENDS (Festival
2001) takes the viewer on a whirlwind tour of the "Queen
of Asia" beauty pageants, a wildly popular phenomenon in which
cross-dressing males and transgenders compete in all-out beauty
pageants. The film focusses on V, a veteran of the pageants who
always seem to come in as first runner-up, but never actually a
winner. QUEEN OF ASIA interviews competitors and pageant organizers
alike, who expound on the importance of the pageant scene and speculate
as to why V never seems to be victorious. For her part, V intimates
her own reasons for pursuing the crown, offering an insightful counterpoint
to the otherwise catty world of which (s)he is a part.
