GOOD FOR HER
(South Korea, 2004) Dir./Wtr.: Elizabeth E. Lee
In GOOD FOR HER, director Elizabeth Lee looks at the highly controversial
issue surrounding the cosmetic surgery boom in Seoul. Through personal
narration, nostalgic images of Korean beauty standards, contemporary
news clips and direct interviews with Korean youngsters and university
professors, the video explores the intense pressures on Korean youth
to undergo cosmetic surgery. Interviewees share personal stories
concerning the pressure to undergo cosmetic surgery in their lives,
and explain how fitting into an increasingly Westernized standard
of beauty leads to personal empowerment for themselves and for other
Korean women. Their voices give an in-depth and personal look into
the universal theme of beauty within the specific framework of a
highly-competitive, trend-sensitive, patriarchal Korean society.
