ONCE WERE WARRIORS
(New Zealand, 1993) Dir.: Lee Tamahori; Scr.: Riwia Brown, Alan
Duff
Beth and Jake have been married for 18 years. It's been an 18-year
love affair, with parties, friends, good times--but under the surface
a growing amount of violence. Jake's animal magnetism is his proudest
feature. To his mates at the pub, he's the kingpin who never loses
a fight. But his violent lifestyle is now affecting his family.
And though Beth has convinced herself that her love will protect
their five children, her hope is gradually being eaten away as she
realizes that her two elder sons seem destined for teenage gangs
and crime. Then there's her daughter Grace, who has special gifts
that also make her the most vulnerable member of the family. And
it is Grace who will be driven to a tragedy which will shake the
family to its core. For Beth, this tragedy will be her darkest hour,
but it will also be the spur which she needs to turn adversity into
triumph and to create new hope for her family's survival.
