ETHAN MAO
(United States/Canada, 2004) Dir./Scr.: Quentin Lee
Booted out of his house for being gay, Ethan Mao, 18, survives on
the street as a hustler selling sex to older men. He meets Remigio,
19, a drug dealer and hustler, who befriends Ethan and takes him
in. After being tipped off by his younger brother that his family
is going on a day trip on Thanksgiving Day, Ethan asks Remigio for
a ride to his family house to get some of his belongings.†On
that fateful day, Ethan and Remigio break into Ethanís family
house. His family unexpectedly returns as his stepmom has left something
at home. His father is shocked and enraged to find Ethan in the
house stealing money and they end up in a physical confrontation.
Restraining his dad at gunpoint, Ethan demands his manipulative
stepmom to return his deceased mother's diamond necklace only to
find out that she is keeping it in the safety deposit box at the
bank. With Remigio by his side, Ethan decides to hold his family
hostage until the next morning when the bank opens.†In the
following increasingly desperate hours, Ethan, his family and Remigio
are forced to confront their unresolved conflicts between each other.
