mid-1980s, a period that saw VC’s transformation into a full-service
media arts center as well as a supporter of emerging Asian American
media artists.

CHISAI
SAMURAI
(United States, 1986) Dir./Scr.: Chris Tashima
Benji, a lonely little boy, dreams of being a brave warrior in medieval
Japan. Director Chris Tashima (VISAS & VIRTUE) uses his theatrical
experinece to create a lively adventure in this piece he completed
as part of the VC Filmmakers Development Program in Narrative Filmmaking.

PAK
BUENG ON FIRE
(United States, 1987) Dir./Scr.: Supachai Surongsain
This narrative film presents a look into the struggle of Thai immigrants
in Los Angeles in the 1980s through two characters Ron who is on
a student visa, and his friend, Charlie, an illegal immigrant. PAK
BUENG was Surongsain’s debut as a film director, and the very
first Thai-American film made.

MOCHI
MONSTER
(United States, 1985) Dir./Scr.: Van Troi Pang
Troi Pang was only 13 years old when he animated this film in the
first VC Filmmakers Development Program in Graphic Filmmaking. He
adds a natural energy into his humorous story of a radioactive monster
that grows out of a pile of mochi, steamed rice cake, in Los Angeles’
Little Tokyo.

VAITAFE:
RUNNING WATER
(United States, 1981) Dir./Scr.: Foe Alo, Jr., and Takashi Fujii
Vaitafe is a typical Samoan student who comes to state side to pursue
his goal of education, but encounters obstacles. Through Samoan
traditions of fa’alavelaves, family concerns, we see the bonding
of family, church and community in the Fa’a Samoa spirit of
mutual support and unity which come to Vaitafe’s aid.
