Katie has longed to have a child for some time with no success.
When she finally does confirm her pregnancy, however, it is on an
unlucky day: the funeral of her mother. Trying to come to terms
with her mother's death, Katie has a hard time accepting her own
motherhood. But when she overcomes her struggles, she comes to understand
something more profound: the fragility of life and the importance
of living.

author Lois-Ann Yamanaka, SILENT YEARS tells a universal story using
the unique dialect of Hawai'ian Pidgin English.

Sophie, a young Korean America youngster, goes to great lengths
to rescue her mother and older sister from a life of domestic abuse
by the family patriarch. She finds, though, that the means of escape
is not as simple as it seems. This deliberate, devastating short
was the 2002 Student Academy Award winner for short film.

EAST SIDE STORIES, SOFIA

Sofia, a too-young Puerto Rican girl sees the young teenaged men and
women in her Lower East Side neighborhood and goes to extreme measures
to look and act as grown-up as they are. The leadoff segment of an
omnibus short entitled LOWER EAST SIDE STORIES, SOFIA is at turns
tender and terrifying, capturing the lead characterís seemingly
misguided struggle for validation and self-fulfillment.
