FOREIGN SKY

(Japan/North Korea, 2005) Dir.: Soni Kum

Highly impressionistic and revealing in equal measures, FOREIGN SKY examines the strained relationships between North Koreans living in Japan and the policies of the Japanese government through the experiences of the filmmaker's family. A third-generation North Korean who grew up in a North Korean community in Japan, director Kum uses family history and unearthed memory to essay the hardships, both internal and external, that are visited upon a greatly misunderstood community of people.

Video, 75 minutes, color, documentary, in Japanese w/E.S.
