OCEAN OF PEARLS Screening - March 21

VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS' PRESENTS AWARD-WINNING "OCEAN OF PEARLS"
MARCH 21, 2009 3:00PM @ CERRITOS LIBRARY

Visual Communications proudly presents a special screening of the award-winning OCEAN OF PEARLS by director Sarab Neelam. Winner of the 2008 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival’s Grand Jury Award and Audience Award for Narrative Feature, OCEAN OF PEARLS will screen on Saturday, March 21st, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at the Cerritos Library’s Skyline Room. The film will be introduced by Linda Sanchez, Congresswoman of California's 39th District, and will be followed by a discussion of the film with select cast and crew members.

OCEAN OF PEARLS essays the story of Amrit Singh, a gifted young doctor from Toronto struggling with the inequities of the American health system and, ultimately, his own identity as a Sikh. Amrit is offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to head a state-of-the-art transplant center in Detroit, which he accepts without consulting either his girlfriend Smita or his family before accepting the offer, which leads to a series of personal and professional crises that cause Amrit to question his spiritual traditions. The weight of Amrit’s double life comes to a head at a family-run Sikh camp when his father confronts him. Back at work, as he struggles with his conscience, Amrit is forced to make a difficult decision when one of his patients goes into a coma.

OCEAN OF PEARLS is based on the real-life experiences of director Sarab Singh Neelam, a physician based in the Detroit area, and is written by the award-winning screenwriter V. Prasad. The film, which stars Omid Abtahi, Heather McComb, Navi Rawat, KT Thangavelu, and Rena Owen, speaks to the universal challenge of how people (not only Sikhs) must balance romance, family, ethics and spirituality in today’s complex world.

Abraham Ferrer, Exhibitions Director at Visual Communications, states “We are excited to partner up with the Cerritos Library to present to the community what we feel is a very special film. It is a heartfelt drama, one that goes beyond mere ethnicity to explore issues of faith as well as modern, social and medical issues, and we look forward to offering this special screening.”

OCEAN OF PEARLS will be presented on Saturday, March 21, 2009, 3:00 p.m. at the Cerritos Library's Skyline Room, located at 18025 Bloomfield Avenue, Cerritos CA 90703-8525 (562) 916-1350. Parking is free at the library's lot. Tickets are $10 General, $8 Students, Seniors and Friends of Visual Communications Members (w/I.D.), and can be purchased at the door.
