Aratani/Japan American Theatre
This
past May, Visual Communications, the nation’s premier Asian
Pacific American media arts center, lost someone very dear to
us, former executive director Linda Mabalot. A close friend, mentor,
and community leader, Linda devoted her life to Visual Communications’
mission and supporting Asian Pacific American artists in every
aspect. She believed wholeheartedly that through media, we could
help relieve social ills and correct gross injustices by educating
and sharing different points of view. And because of her worldly
view of media, Visual Communications has grown to a full-service
media arts center with programs in Education, Preservation, Production
and Presentation.
Past/
Forward marks a crucial turning point for Visual Communications.
Since Linda’s passing, the organization has gone through
a period of reflection and planning. The current shortfall in
arts funding from foundations and federal, state and local governments
has not made the situation easier on us. The fundraiser, to be
held on October 25, will be a celebration of the arts, of Asian
Pacific American heritage and the tremendous achievements of our
filmmakers and community. More importantly, it will be about bringing
back old friends and memories, and looking forward to a bright
new future for Visual Communications. The
event will kickoff the Linda Mabalot Legacy Fund,
a campaign to support programming and operations with the long-term
goal of an endowment fund. Sponsorship and proceeds from the event
will benefit Visual Communications’ programs in Education,
Preservation, Production and Presentation.
