PINOY VISIONS 2003
Presented by FilAm ARTS, Inc. and Visual Communications
Curators: Abraham Ferrer, Wendell Pascual

Programs at the George Lucas Instructional Building, Room 108 are presented in collaboration with the Division of Animation and Digital Arts of the School of Cinema/Television, University of Southern CaliforniaVisual Communications and the Association for the Advancement of Filipino American Arts and Culture, Inc. (presenters of the Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture – FPAC) are pleased to present the tenth edition of PINOY VISIONS, which has showcased the best, brightest, and upcoming Pinoy filmmaking talents since 1994. This year, we’ll augment our annual “living room” screenings on Sept. 3 and 4 with a first-ever PINOY VISIONS ONLINE component, to premiere in August on the Visual Communications website (www.vconline.org). Additionally, we will present a special selection of new works on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5 and 6 at the USC George Lucas Screening Room, and a selection of PINOY VISIONS 2003 highlights at Pt. Fermin Park, site of Fiesta Weekend activities. Our expanded line-up is obviously more far-flung than in past years, when we were contained in a single afternoon slot at FPAC’s old headquarters at Cabrillo Beach Auditorium. But that goes to show that we’re getting everywhere, and nothing’s gonna stop us, yo.

ANO BA ITO

(United States, 2003) Directed by Mar Elepaño
Inspired by stark images from the exhibit
“Confrontations, Crossings, & Convergence,”
animator Mar Elepaño’s stark poem of place
and belonging ponders the station of Filipinos
in an increasing cosmopolitan society.

MONDAY NIGHTS IN HISTORIC FILIPINOTOWN
(United States, 2002) Directed by Arnold Noche

from the city in this evocative spoken word and
music piece.
Video, 3 minutes, spoken word/documentary
(Download movie: 7.14MB)

NOT FILIPINO/AMERICAN ENOUGH
(United States, 2002) Directed by Victoria Mejia
A young woman ponders perceptions of acculturalization,
in the process questioning the things that identify her as
Filipino and American.
Video, 4 minutes, spoken word
(Download movie: 9,01MB)

PICTURE OF ME WITHOUT YOU, A

(United States, 2002) Directed by Isa Chu
Love feels so good and so right, even long
after the relationship is long past. A powerful
visual interpretation of a spoken-word tome.
Video, 5 minutes, spoken word
(Download movie: 5.8MB)

SHUDDABUG

(United States, 2002) Directed by Lakandiwa De Leon
SHUDDABUG observes what happens when two
opposing perspectives collide. An apathetic litterbug
and an overzealous activist cross paths with hilarious
results. Through humor and subtle messages, the film
deals with the notion of karma and how actions, however
small, come around in the end.
Video, 3 minutes, narrative
(Download movie: 6.22MB)

TAGGED

(United States, 2001) Directed by Francesca “Nina” Villavicencio
TAGGED ponders how we define Los Angeles. An unnamed Tagger, believing that everything—not just a single word or definition—describes the city, leaves his own distinct “tag” everywhere he goes. In the end, others see the connection.
Video, 4 minutes, narrative
(Download movie: 11.6MB)

FILIPINO VETERAN’S DAY MARCH

(United States, 2002) Directed by John Cruz
An unnarrated view of a crew of Filipino veterans participating in a Veteran’s Day march may not be in itself significant. Director John Cruz’ film drips with irony, however, when the fact that these veterans are among the few still-living World War II survivors fighting for long-overdue promises of U.S. citizenship is considered.
Video, 4 minutes, documentary
(Download movie: 20.22MB)
