Landmark's Regent Theatre, 1045 Broxton Avenue
Tuesday, June 26, 7 p.m.
Majestic Crest Theatre, 1262 Westwood Blvd.
Both venues Westwood Village

Visual Communications is pleased to partner with the Los Angeles Film Festival to present the Los Angeles premiere screening of Stephane Gauger's award-winning OWL AND THE SPARROW. Stephane, known to VC FILMFEST aficionados for his luminous short film SEABIRDS (Festival 1999), teams with fellow VC FILMFEST alumni Timothy Linh Bui (GREEN DRAGON, Festival Opening Night 2001) and Ham Tran (JOURNEY FROM THE FALL, Festival Opening Night 2006) to produce his debut feature-length narrative, an exquisite, warm-hearted tale that unfolds on the streets of Ho Chih Minh City. Three intertwining stories center around Thuy (newcomer Pham Thi Han), an irrepressible 10 year-old who runs away to the city instead of staying in a stultifying life in a country orphanage. In Ho Chi Minh City she befriends Hai (Le The Lu), a zookeeper whose dedication to his job masks a deep loneliness; and Lan (Cat Ly), an airline stewardess whose own sense of displacement and heartbreak is appeased - to a point - by carrying on a clandestine affair with a married airline pilot.

Director Stephane Gauger and members of his cast and crew will be in attendance at these screenings; the film, which World-Premiered last January at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, received the Grand Jury Award at the 2007 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.

Film Independent's 2007 LOS ANGELES FILM FESTIVAL runs from June 21 through July 1 For event information and tickets, call 866.FILM.FEST (866.345.6337) or visit LAFilmFest.com Tickets go on sale June 8. For more info go to www.lafilmfest.com

Tuesday, July 10, 7:30 p.m.
Laemmle's One Colorado, 42 Miller Alley
Oldtown Pasadena, 91103

Join us as we team up with Red Storm Pictures to present a special screening of EVE & THE FIREHORSE, the award-winning debut feature by Julia Kwan. Since its World Premiere screening at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival, EVE has been showcased at nearly 40 international film festivals (including a coveted slot as the Centerpiece Presentation at VC FILMFEST 2006) and has received numerous awards and accolades both worldwide and in director Kwan's home country of Canada. This special screening is in support of the film's eagerly awaited release on DVD, at press time set for July 24. EVE & THE FIREHORSE observes the life of Eve, a precocious nine year old with an overactive imagination who was born in the year of the Fire Horse -- notorious among Chinese families for producing the most troublesome children. Caught between her 11-year-old authoritative sister's fantasies of sainthood and cultural confusion and her own sense of right and wrong, Eve faces the challenges of childhood with fanciful humor and wide-eyed wonder. Sometimes the most troublesome children are the ones that touch our hearts most deeply...

Director Julia Kwan will be on hand for a Q&A session, and schedule permitting, other special guests will be in attendance as well. DVDs of the film will be available for purchase. Admission: $10.00; $8.00 students/seniors and Friends of Visual Communications members w/current I.D.. Advance tickets may be purchased online at www.laemmle.com. For more information on the film, please visit www.eveandthefirehorse.com.

SPIDER LILIES by Zero Chou

Presented as part of OutFest
Friday July 13, 9:45 p.m.
Gallery Theatre, Barnsdall Art Park, 4800 Hollywood Blvd.
Hollywood, 90027

Join us as we partner with OutFest, presenter of the nation's largest LGBT film festival as we partner up to present the L.A. premiere screening of SPIDER LILIES by Zero Chou. Winner of the 2007 Berlin Film Festival's Teddy Award for best feature, SPIDER LILIES is an intricate story of love between two young women. Jade is a naughty webcam girl who is reunited with her childhood crush, gorgeous and repressed tattoo artist Takeko. Both women are obsessed with a spider lily flower design that's linked to painful memories that keep the two women apart -- but also might be the key to bringing them closer. VC FILMFEST audiences may remember director Chou as the creator of the visually arresting SPLENDID FLOAT from 2005, and this latest work mixes equal parts youthful bravado and visual/romantic fireworks into an absolutely stunning breakthrough new work. This is a work not to be missed!
