Through the ARMED WITH A CAMERA FELLOWSHIP emerging media artists will
capture their world, surroundings and outlook on life as a part of a
new generation of Asian Pacific Americans. Visual Communications (VC)
seeks to cultivate a new generation of Asian Pacific American media
artists committed to preserving the legacy and vision of VC. FIVE MINUTES
OF FAME, this years theme, will award five fellows $500 to complete,
within a five-month span of time, a five-minute video.
Final projects must be shot in digital video format and completed by
April 12, 2004. A special program will showcase all completed projects
at various VC exhibitions across the city of Los Angeles, including
the VC FilmFest: Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film and Video Festival and
other venues nationwide. VC will own the productions and will also package
and distribute completed works. Distribution income will aid in the
continuation of the Armed with a Camera Fellowship.
Benefits

-Monetary compensation for their artistic work
-Access to VCs post-production facilities (valued at $700/week)
-One year VC FRIEND membership (valued at $50)
-Exhibition of their new work at the VC FilmFest 2004, and videostreamed
on our website, www.vconline.org
-Voucher to attend one Training Workshop though the VC Digital Academy
(valued at up to $250)
-Opportunity to build portfolio and gain exposure which may open up other
exhibition opportunities & the opportunity to compete with media veterans
-Future use of VC as a fiscal sponsor
-Technical assistance when necessary
Applicant
Eligibility
Eligible applicants must be of Asian Pacific descent, 25 years old and
younger in the year 2003, and residents of California. Applicants must
also demonstrate a commitment to the media arts and be able to submit
a sample of completed work.
Project
Criteria
All projects must conform to the following guidelines:
-Final piece must be a new, original work
-Final piece must shot in digital video format, no 16mm film
-Final piece must be completed by April 12, 2004 for inclusion in
the VC FilmFest 2004
-Total length of final piece must not exceed five minutes
-Budget for each project shall not exceed $500
-Priority will be given to animation, documentary and experimental
pieces.
Fellows
will be required to meet twice a month at Visual Communications from
January through April 2004.
Fellowship
Selection Process
Five media artists will be selected by a multi-generational review panel
composed of community members, media artists, critics, and curators.
Selections will be made on the basis of creative excellence and innovation.
Applicants will be contacted by mid-January 2004.

ABOUT
VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS
Founded in 1970, Visual Communications is the first Asian Pacific media
arts center in the nation. The mission of Visual Communications is to
promote intercultural understanding through the creation, presentation,
preservation and support of media works by and about Asian Pacific Americans.
Visual Communications was created with the understanding that media
and the arts are important vehicles to organize and empower communities,
build connections between generations, challenge perspectives, and create
an environment for critical thinking, necessary to build a more just
and humane society. That understanding is demonstrated through the commitment
to excellence in the media arts at the grassroots level through a range
of programs that promote honest and sensitive portrayals of Asians and
Asian Pacific Americans. These programs are complemented by the long-standing
collaborative efforts with other community organizations and a commitment
to the development of an informed community.
